Rochdale boasts a rich and diverse musical legacy, from Gracie Fields to The Courteeners, Lisa Stansfield to Autechre. It was where the iconic track ‘Atmosphere’ by Joy Division was recorded, and where groundbreaking music continues to thrive.
Rochdale Development Agency, in collaboration with The Stockport Music Story and Voltalab Sound Studios present Rochdale Music Stories: a celebration of the town’s rich musical heritage through a studio-recorded compilation album and a one-off live performance. Part of Rochdale’s Town of Culture programme, this bold project brings together local artists to reimagine iconic tracks first recorded at the historic Kenion Street studio. The result: a limited-edition, high-quality vinyl release and a live show at Champness Hall featuring special guest appearances - both honouring Rochdale’s influential past while spotlighting its vibrant, diverse present-day talent.
If you're a musician from Rochdale we'd love to hear from you. We are looking for 10 - 12 artists for a paid commission to rework classic tracks recorded in the Kenion Street studio. Working with Voltalab you will reimagine an iconic track but in your distinct style. This is open to all musical genres - we really want to reflect the diverse talent across the borough.
Pre-production and recording is due to take place during September and October and the live show is on Saturday 14th March 2026. You must be able to commit to working on the track independently before coming into Voltalab, plus be available for the live performance in March.
All applicants will be notified within two weeks of the closing date if they have been successful or not. Shortlisting will be based on a selection of criteria, including genre, experience and availability, by a panel of judges across all organisations involved.
If you have any questions about the project please email Laura at musicstories@voltalab.co.uk
